About Wellness Gallery
Wellness Gallery, a Catalyst Foundation project, ran from 2021 to June 2022, and aims to engage South Australians of all ages to reflect on the concept of ageing (over 50 years old) in media and to contribute to a future society that has moved beyond ageism. Wellness Gallery is supported by a Positive Ageing Fellowship Grant from Office for Ageing Well, SA Health to help spread more realistic images that celebrate age-positivity, authenticity and diversity.
Catalyst Foundation is a not-for-profit registered charity in North Adelaide. We are the leading provider of community information in South Australia. We provide free and independent information to all South Australians, focusing on areas such as aged care, disability, housing, and connecting people to services.

There are 3 parts of our project:
- the "Ageing Well" Photography Competition, which received submissions from November 2021 until 31 January 2022
- the "structured photoshoots"
- and ongoing use of the free-to-access resource of stock images, depicting wellness and positive ageing in Australia - for use in all marketing material relating to ageing across Australia
Inclusive, Age-Positive Image Gallery:
Currently, many of the stock images used in media depict ageing individuals (50+ years old) in a negative or stereotypical way, that does not accurately capture the diversity and reality of most ageing Australians.
Wellness Gallery will be developing a new inclusive, authentic, age-positive image gallery resource, using submissions from the Photography Competition and photos taken during the professional structured photoshoots. The image gallery will provide access to ‘stock’ images, for individuals and organisations to access and use royalty-free in their marketing and communications. This will provide a positive alternative to stereotypical and/or negative images currently used so often. The high quality photos will be available for free via our website and a free stock resource website, such as Pexels. Images will be de-identified to maintain individual's privacy.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers, please be aware that this website, and the resource gallery following completion of the project, may contain images and voices of deceased persons.
"Ageing Well" Photography Competition:
Wellness Gallery launched an “Ageing Well” Photography Competition, which was open to entries from all South Australians from November 2021 to 31 January 2022. This part of the project aims to raise awareness of the issue of Ageism in Media and encourage all South Australians to help change the narrative of ageing in Australian media.
The theme for this year's competition was "Ageing Well"! We encouraged entrants to consider what Ageing Well means to them and their community. Ageing Well may involve being part of the community, sharing moments with family and friends, being active, enjoying life and hobbies and much more! What does Ageing Well mean to you?
The competition was open to anyone living in South Australia - professional photographers, amateurs and enthusiasts were encouraged to enter! For participants under 18 years of age, a parent or guardian consent was required.
The Top 30 best images, based on the how best the image met the brief/guidelines, photographic skill, artistic sensibilities, emotion, impact and originality, as determined by Chloe Henderson, lecturer of Photo Imaging at TAFE SA, and the board members of Catalyst Foundation, became finalists. The top 3 best images, as determined by public votes attracted gift card prizes, up to $300. Click this link to view the finalists.
PRIZES:
1st Prize: a $300 gift card
2nd Prize: a $200 gift card
3rd Prize: a $100 gift card

Free Community Structured Photoshoots
We will also be working with independent, volunteer professional/student photographers and local community groups to develop a portfolio of images, in addition to the competition entries, to add to the online image gallery. These photos will form the bulk of the new images within the gallery and aim to further challenge the concept of ageism in media. They will provide another resource of alternative imagery that more accurately depicts ageing Australians’ diverse narratives. We welcome photos of all ageing South Australians and would like to accurately represent the diversity of Australia's ageing population, including those living with a disability, people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds, LGBTIQA+ communities, Aboriginal Communities and people living in regional and rural areas.
The structured photoshoots aim to showcase existing community groups across South Australia and be realistic photos of what they are already doing to demonstrate positive ageing (photographs must be of people over 50 years old). The photos will aim to be mostly candid, in order to gain the most realistic imagery of the Australian community. Wellness Gallery project officers will attend the community group with the volunteer photographer, provide information about Wellness Gallery and ageing in media to the community group and be there to support both the organisation and the photographer.
We are also interested in connecting with individuals over 50 years old, who may like to participate in individual photoshoots, but are not connected with any particular community group.
Photographers are welcome to attend local community groups independently or create their own positive ageing portraiture shoots (in addition to Wellness Gallery-supported photoshoots) to submit to the Wellness Gallery, however model release forms for use as stock images must be gathered independently by the photographer in this case.
This is not a paid opportunity, but such a fantastic project! It would be great to connect with photographers in non-metropolitan Adelaide or regional SA towns as we have many interested community groups already outside of metro Adelaide!
